Honor our Veterans

Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May.  This year it will be celebrated on Saturday, May 19, 2018.  Thanks to President Harry S Truman, it’s a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces. President Truman led the effort to establish a holiday in order for citizens to unite and to honor our military heroes for their patriotic service in support of the United States of America.

MAY 2018 LUNCHEON/BUSINESS MEETING

The Novelty Senior Citizens met May 3, 2018 for their monthly luncheon. And we are SOOO glad that spring is here! Judith had made another centerpiece for the food table—with flowers, etc.

Nurse Sherry Goodwin came, took blood pressures, and inquired about health issues. Last month she had told of a class on “balance” offered in Edina—and two Novelty seniors are attending it.

Kathryn led the pledge, and then gave the invocation. Happy Birthday was sung to Marsha and Denis: they blew out the candles on the cake made by Dorothy.

Those attending the luncheon were Diana Cheatum, Denis and Dorothy Howard, Jim and Marsha Pinson, Judith Rhoades, Kathryn Wilkerson, and Helen Pulse.
After cleanup (mostly by Judith), Kathryn opened the business meeting. Marsha read the minutes to last month's meeting and they were approved as read. Judith gave the treasurer's report, and it was also approved as presented. A couple checks had not yet cleared the bank. The electric bill is now on a budget plan and will be the same each month: bill was just received today.

In old business:
  1. We have received a thank you note from Mildred, for the group sending her a birthday card.
  2. Per last month's minutes, we were disappointed in the spring fundraiser--the sausage/biscuit/gravy breakfast held the day before Easter.  Diana suggested that perhaps we have a spring fundraiser at a different time other than day before Easter. She also suggested (so as not to conflict with the restaurant) perhaps having an evening meal, such as spaghetti. We will think about this and decide later.
  3. Kathryn has contacted Sid about the door, but he has been busy out of town so has not yet looked at it. Hopefully know more next month.
New business:
  1. Kathryn resigned as president of this organization due to being gone nearly half the year. It was decided that Diana will take over as President, and Kathryn will be Vice-President (they will just change positions).
  2. Diana will contact Lucas to see if he would mow our small area for us.  The grass has grown enough now that it definitely needs mowing.
  3. Marsha brought the information about the Hurdland 4th of July vendors. Vendors must pay this year for a spot to set up. As we had very few donations for the Wreaths Across America project last year at Hurdland, it was decided to not have a booth there.
  4. Judith has received the information about the CornFest. She was given permission to go ahead and send that in whenever she decides.
  5. Our float that we have used the past couple years (big wreath) has been sold so we would not have that. We will decide if we want to have an entry in the parades at each of the above events.
  6. Marsha will make the birthday cake in June when we will celebrate at least two birthdays. Coffee makers for the month were assigned.
  7. Next luncheon/meeting will be June 7.
