June 7, 2018 found twelve
at the Novelty Senior Center to enjoy the carry in luncheon, which is
held monthly. Jim & Marsha Pinson, Kathryn Wilkerson, Mildred
Bragg, Karen Lumley, Allie Hemme, Helen Pulse, Diana Cheatum, Carolyn
Morgret, Judith Rhoades, Denis and Dorothy Howard were present, with
Sherry Goodwin of the KCHD arriving to take blood pressures, and
check on various individual's health concerns.
President Diana led the
pledge and then asked Jim to give the blessing. Happy Birthday was
sung to Judith, who blew out the candle on the cake made by
Marsha.
Leading the line to get
the food is always the privilege of the birthday celebrant(s). Much
good food was enjoyed, from homemade bread, meat dishes (including
spare ribs), several vegetables and salads, and a number of desserts
in addition to the birthday cake.
After cleanup by Karen
and Judith, Diana called the business meeting to order, with seven
staying for that. Minutes from last month's meeting were read and
approved. Treasurer's report was given and approved as presented:
(Helen made the motion, Kathryn seconded to approve the treasurer
report). A BIG thank you to the
good Samaritan that mowed our yard the first time. We certainly
appreciated it, and now have Lucas Cheatum to do this for us.
Old Business:
- Kathryn read an old-time article from the Sentinel from 1918 which told of the Memorial Day celebration in Novelty, with nearly the whole town gathering with “real” flowers and parading down to the cemetery, then back to the church for singing and tributes to the veterans. Kathryn remembers her mother talking about doing this.
- Marsha gave an update on WAA project: she has begun collecting money for wreaths. She will place an ad in the Sentinel to remind people that they may now begin sending money for wreath(s). She also placed it on her Facebook page, and on the Senior Center's blogsite: (check next entry for that information)
- The banners used on the parade vehicle and in the cemetery were retrieved from Kent and are stored at the Center.
- We have had several newcomers who have volunteered to help us out with this project: Jeannette , Walla , as well as Lynn and Lois. We appreciate all offers of help!
New Business:
- Judith has not yet sent in the information/money for a booth at CornFest: she will do that within the month, and request we have the same spot as we've had in the past.
- Several will look into replacing the air conditioner. It is old and noisy, and hasn't been used for a couple of years. More discussion later.
- As there are no birthdays that we know of in July, no one will make a cake. (We always have desserts anyway) Coffee makers for the month were designated. Next luncheon will be Thursday, July 5, 2018 here at the Center. We begin eating at noon!
Judith made motion to
adjourn, Helen and Kathryn seconded. Meeting adjourned.
