November 2, 2017 found the Novelty Senior Citizens hosting their monthly luncheon at the Center. Present were Denis and Dorothy Howard, Freda Bradley, Sue Ahern, Helen Pulse, Carolyn Morgret, Mildred Bragg, Karen Lumley, Barbara Poor, Judith Rhoades, Marsha Pinson, and Diana Cheatum. Diana led us in the pledge to the U.S. Flag, and Karen gave the invocation. Although Judith had made a delicious fresh apple cake, no birthday celebrants were present. Sherry Goodwin came in a bit late and took BP readings, etc. while we were eating. She also gave one flu shot.
After cleanup, Diana brought the business meeting to order. Judith gave the treasurer's report which was accepted as presented. Marsha read the secretary's minutes to the last meeting (which had been published in the Edina Sentinel): they too were accepted as presented.
Old/Unfinished Business:
1. On October 9, Marsha and Judith were on the coffee break radio show at KMEMFM radio in Memphis, Missouri. They were talking about the Wreaths Across America project. Several commented they had done a good job.
2. WAA project. We have EXCEEDED the number of wreaths that we had last year!!!!! Cemeteries where all veterans will be remembered with a wreath are Novelty and Bee Ridge.
Thanks to all who have purchased them. Remember, the ceremony is Saturday, December 16, 2017 in Novelty. If your wreath is going to a different cemetery, please pick it up at the Novelty Legion Hall after the ceremony. More next month.
3. The Thanksgiving meal that was mentioned last month will be held Thanksgiving Day at the Novelty American Legion Hall. Please make reservations by letting the Novelty Christian Church know.
4. Fundraising Soup Luncheon and Bake Sale. November 11, 2017 at the Center. Serving soups--chili, cheesy vegetable, and potato deluxe...and a possible other kind! Also serving pies, and tea/coffee. List was read as to what each person is donating.
BAKE SALE will have breads--both quick breads and yeast bread, cookies, brownies, pies, cakes, muffins, and cupcakes. Plus more. Hunters--stop in for a bowl of hot soup and buy some items to take with you when you are out hunting (yes, some of them are individual sized portions).
The signs and barrels to put up for advertising that day are ready.
Marsha will make the birthday cake next month (but a couple of the December celebrants wanted pie, so read next month to see if she remembers!) Coffee makers for each week were assigned.
Judith made motion, with Carolyn seconding. Meeting adjourned.
And here's the recipe for the non-birthday cake today made by Judith.
GRAN'S APPLE CAKE
1 2/3 cups sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 tablespoons canola or vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda

1/2 cup shopped pecans
FROSTING
4 ounces cream cheese (can use reduced-fat)
2 tablespoons butter (no substitutes) softened
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup confectioners' sugar
In a mixing bowl, combine the sugar, eggs, applesauce, oil and vanilla. Beat for 2 minutes on medium speed. Combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt; add to applesauce mixture and beat until combined. Fold in apples and pecans.
Transfer to a 13" x 9" x 2" baking dish coated with nonstick cooking spray. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes until top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.
For frosting: Combine cream cheese, butter and vanilla in a small mixing bowl until smooth. Gradually beat in confectioners' sugar (mixture will be soft). Spread over cooled cake. Yield: 18 servings.

OCTOBER, 2017 LUNCHEON
On
Thursday, October 5, 2017, the Novelty Senior Citizens met for the
monthly luncheon. The center was decorated for fall with leaves,
pumpkins, scarecrows and other “autumn” décor. President
Kathryn Wilkerson led the pledge to the US flag, then had the prayer
before eating. No birthday celebrants were present, so Dorothy's
cake was simply enjoyed without the birthday candles on it. Present
to enjoy the fellowship and food were Denis and Dorothy Howard, Sue
Ahern, Helen Pulse, Angela Williams and Isaac, Diana Cheatum, Mildred
Bragg, Karen Lumley, Judith Rhoades, Merry Gillespie, Kathryn
Wilkerson, Barbara Poor, and Marsha Pinson. Nurse Krista Holman and a
student nurse came and took blood pressures, etc. while we were
eating.
Kathryn
called the business meeting to order after dishes and cleanup were
completed. As the minutes had been in the newspaper, they were not read, but approved as published. Judith gave the treasurer's report which was accepted
as presented.
Old
Business consisted of a wrap-up of the Cornfest stand for
Wreaths Across America. Marsha gave an update on the wreaths. The end
of October is the last date to purchase a wreath for the holidays--please send ($15 per wreath) to Novelty Senior Citizens', PO Box 65, Novelty MO 63460.
Judith made a motion to give Larry Clark a token sum of money for the use of their
tent during the 4th of July and Cornfest as the booth,
and also his help in selling wreaths at the St. Joseph Catholic
Church. Diana seconded. Motion approved.
Vice-President
Diana took over the meeting as the president had to leave.
The
major new business was planning for the annual soup luncheon
fundraiser. It will be, as always, the first day of firearms deer
hunting: this year that is Saturday, November 11th.
Serving from 11-1:00/2:00. (If we still have soup, we will feed
you!) Free will donation to help with center expenses. Three kinds
of soup will be served—chili, potato deluxe, and cheesy vegetable.
Desserts (mostly pies) will also be included in the meal. A bake
sale will be held at the same time, with several items being
“hand-held” size for any hunters to take with them to the hunt.
Supplies were covered as well as volunteering as to who will donate
what to the event.
Helen
P. moved to adjourn, Judith seconded. Meeting adjourned.
Judith
will make the birthday cake for November, and weekly coffee makers
were assigned.

SUMMER LUNCHEONS
August 3, 2017 found the Novelty Senior Citizens at the center for their monthly luncheon. Those present were Diana Cheatum, Freda Bradley, Carolyn Morgret, Helen Pulse, Sue Ahern, Kathryn Wilkerson, Denis and Dorothy Howard, Mildred Bragg, Karen Lumley, Allie Hemme, and Judith Rhoades. Kathryn and Freda celebrated their birthdays.
After cleanup, Kathryn called the business meeting to order. Judith gave the treasurer's report for the month. Minutes (from the paper) were also read and approved as corrected. Add Diana's name as she worked the booth on July 4th at Hurdland, although her name was absent from the paper's account, with Kathryn's being in twice.
Carolyn had picked up the boot from Casey's and will place it in another location. Some money had been received for Wreaths. It is also planned for some to be on KMEM's coffee break on October 9 to talk about the Wreaths Across America project.
Diana will make the cake for the September birthdays. Coffee makers were chosen.
Notes on the meeting were kept by Judith due to Marsha's absence.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The Novelty Senior Citizens met September 7, 2017 for the monthly luncheon. All repeated the Pledge of Allegiance. Jeff Otto then gave the blessing. We sang Happy Birthday to Helen Pulse whose birthday was September 6th. Diana had baked the cake. Those enjoying the meal were Helen Pulse, Sue Ahern, Jeff and Leah Otto, Denis and Dorothy Howard, Barbara Poor, Kathryn Wilkerson, Diana Cheatum, and Judith Rhoades.
Kathryn called the meeting to order at 1:20. There were no minutes due to the absence of the secretary. Judith gave the treasurer's report; motion was made and seconded to accept her report. No new business was brought forward.
In old business was a recap of workers for the CornFest this coming weekend. Those working the booth will be Lynn Van Dolah, Lois Browning, Diana Cheatum, Kathryn Wilkerson, Barbara Poor and Judith Rhoades. Judith spent most of the day there. Several of the above also rode on the float. Kent and April Franke were in charge of that.
Coffee makers were scheduled for the upcoming month. Dorothy will make the cake for October's luncheon. Meeting adjourned at 1:50 p.m.
(minutes were taken by Judith in the absence of secretary Marsha).
