DECK THE CENTER WITH BOUGHS OF HOLLY! (or wreaths of Balsam!)

Novelty Senior Citizens' met on Thursday, December 5, 2019 for the monthly luncheon.  The center was festively decorated for the Christmas season, complete with tree.  Phyllis was there from the health department to take blood pressures, and give out other information.  Shortly after noon, Diana led the pledge to the flag, and Denis gave the blessing for the food.  Diana celebrated a birthday this month, so "Happy Birthday" was sung to her, and she blew out candles on the birthday pie (made by Judith).  Others there were Judith, Marsha, and Dorothy.  We were glad to have Phyllis stay and join us in eating our lunch.

Judith and Diana did the cleanup.  About 1:15, Diana called the business meeting to order.  Minutes were read by Marsha, and approved.  Judith gave the financial report:  that too was approved.

Business items discussed included:
1.       We will have our "Christmas Snack Day" at coffee on December 17th.  Anyone is welcome to join us.  We will have coffee, tea, and any Christmas snacks you'd like to share with the group.  This will also be for the Green Acres FCE club.
2.       Wreaths Across America project.
a.       Joyce has received the ceremonial flags.  These are the small ones that are on the wreaths that are placed by members (or family) of each particular branch of the service--army, navy, marines, merchant marines, air force, and coast guard, along with family members of someone who was a POW/MIA.
b.       The programs are in the process:  Joyce and Judith have worked hard to get a nice program to give out to those who attend the ceremony.
c.       Judith will get the bigger flags from the Knox City American Legion post to use that day at the ceremony.
d.       The triangle that was used to hold the wreaths at the cemetery is not available:  Judith will get some boards (paid for with funds from the center) and get it remade.  Jim will put up the invitation banner at the cemetery reminding people of the ceremony a week ahead of time.
e.        We have sponsored 393 wreaths for veterans buried in Knox County.  Thank you to all who have helped us in this project.  We are not sure when the wreaths will arrive, but sometime next week, before Saturday the 14th!!! (We hope).  We will need to place the tarp down on the center's floor to keep the balsam needles off the carpet.  The wreaths will be at the cemetery prior to the ceremony at the Novelty Christian Church.  All are invited to come to the cemetery and help place those 90 wreaths there.  If you have a wreath for another cemetery or veteran elsewhere, please come to the Senior Center AFTER the ceremony to pick it up.
3.       Coffee makers were assigned for the month of December:  10th--Diana; 17th--Marsha; 24th--Judith; 31st--Donna Faye.  Next monthly luncheon will be on January 2, 2020, with Diana making the birthday cake for that month.

Wreaths are "on the move"!

Yesterday, we loaded up the first wreaths to be sent overseas to the Netherlands! #PlayAPart2019
Read more information about the advancement of the mission overseas: https://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/pages/19520/News/272/…

Wreaths were sent this year to Normandy cemetery in France, the American cemetery in Luxemborg, and American Cemetery in the Netherlands, to honor those American soldiers who did not make it home from WW2.  (This is the first year that wreaths were sent to Luxemborg and Netherlands.

This year more than 2,000 locations worldwide participated in the wreaths project--that is an increase of over 400 locations.  And we are one!!!!!  This is our 4th year to honor our veterans,

On November 7, 2019, the Novelty Senior Citizens' held their monthly carry-in luncheon.  Phyllis and Alyssa, a student nurse, from the KCHD were there for blood pressures, etc.  Shortly after noon, Diana led the pledges,. Denis gave the blessing for the food, and we enjoyed a nice November meal together.  Only Diana, Judith, Marsha, Denis and Dorothy were present.  All ladies helped with the cleanup.

At 1:20, Diana called the business meeting to order.  Minutes of last month's meeting were read and approved.  Financial report was also given and approved.

Business matters:
  1. On Tuesday prior, November 5th, Judith and Joyce put out surveyor flags at the Novelty Cemetery so veteran graves will be more easily located for the December 14th WAA ceremony.
  2. Our soup luncheon will be November 16, 2019--first day of firearms deer season…as always.  All supplies are in place (see last month's minutes).  Marsha will make some tea to have that day as well.  We invite all to join us for some delicious homemade soups and desserts for a free-will donation.  A bake sale will also be held that same day.
  3. Plans are going well for the Wreaths Across America ceremony on December 14th.  It will be at 11:00 at the Novelty Christian Church.  All participants have been asked, some mentioning that "it would be an honor" to do so.   We have more wreaths sponsored this year than ever before, with just a few more late ones--the absolute final date we will take them, though, is the November 15th.
  4. It was decided to have the Tuesday coffee on December 24th.  Perhaps having a Christmas snack day on the 17th.
  5. Next month's meeting will be December 5, 2019.  Judith will make the birthday "cake" although request for pie was made from birthday celebrants.  Coffee makers for each week were assigned.

October's Bright Blue Weather!!!

On Thursday, October 3, 2019, four members of the Knox County Health Department came to the Novelty Senior Center to hold a flu clinic. The clinic was from 12:00-1:30 p.m. A good number of residents came to take advantage of having the clinic in our town. It was also the day of the monthly regular luncheon. The center was decorated for fall with a few Halloween decorations added in. Those staying and enjoying the meal were Ronald and Shirley Rhoades, Judith Rhoades, Kathryn Wilkerson, Dorothy & Denis Howard, Sue Ahern, Jim & Marsha Pinson, Helen Pulse, Gerald & Betty Perry.
Dorothy had baked the apple cake, but no one present had a birthday this month. We do wish Jeff Otto a happy birthday later this month. Judith and Sue did the cleanup.
Kathryn called the business meeting to order at 1:30. Marsha read the minutes for last month, for which Judith had taken notes. They were approved as read. Judith then gave the treasurer's report which was corrected and approved.
Business items:
  1. The soup luncheon will be Saturday, November 16, 2019: 11:00-2:00 p.m. for a free-will donation. Four kinds of soup will be served. Marsha will make potato soup and pizza soup, Diana will make chili, and Carolyn will make cheesy vegetable. Judith will supply a relish tray and crackers. Helen will bring shredded cheese (for the pizza soup). Desserts will be furnished by Dorothy, Sue, Barbara, Judith, Donna Faye, Diana. A bake sale will also be held in conjunction with the luncheon. So come and enjoy lunch on the first day of firearms deer season!
  2. WAA project: At this time we have exceeded the number of  wreaths we had last year! Marsha has money for 19 more ready to send in, and will have some more. Deadline for money is October 30, 2019 so we can get them all ordered in time for delivery in December. The ceremony will be Saturday, December 14, 11:00 a.m. at the Novelty Christian Church, with all invited to attend.
  3. Carolyn had sent down calendars for 2020 from Hudson-Rimer.
  4. Marsha will make a cake for November birthdays. Coffee makers for October were assigned.

    And flowers of June together,
Ye cannot rival for one hour
    October's bright blue weather"
