 December 2020 luncheon

The Novelty Sr. Citizens’ met Thursday December 3, 2020 for the monthly luncheon.  Christmas decorations were already up, complete with tree.  Thanks to those Tuesday coffee ladies.    Health department will not be attending until this pandemic subsides in the county.  They are truly under-appreciated for all their work during this time, trying to keep our county citizens healthy.  Thank you,  Health Dept!

Diana led the group in the pledge of allegiance.  Denis gave the blessing for the food.  A birthday pie (cherry), complete with some candles, was there to help Diana celebrate her December birthday.  Those singing “Happy  Birthday” to her were Judith Rhoades, Kathryn Wilkerson, Barbara Poor, Dorothy & Denis Howard, Jim & Marsha Pinson.

After cleanup by Kathryn, Judith, Barbara, and Diana, the business meeting was called to order by president Diana.  Marsha read the minutes to last month’s meeting.  She moved they be approved as read, Judith seconded.  Motion passed.  Judith gave the treasurer’s report (which included the donations from the soup luncheon and bake sale).  She asked to approve the report, seconded by Kathryn.  Motion passed.

Unfinished business included the report on the WAA wreath project.  Website shows we have 347 sponsored wreaths:  that’s good considering the year!  However, due to the health issues we are having,  it has been decided to cancel the ceremony for December 19th.  We are sad to say that we will not be able to recognize  our veterans in this way.  We WILL, however, plan to lay the wreaths at the Novelty cemetery at 11:00 a.m. that day, and ask for all who can, to please come help do this.  We will also be having a “drive-through” pick-up for those who have purchased wreaths for a different cemetery.  Those sponsors will need come to the Novelty Sr. Center between 10:00 a.m.  and 1:00 p.m.   They may stay in their vehicle (honk if needed) and someone will come to you.  That person will ask your name and how many wreaths you purchased.  They will then come inside to get the wreath and bring it out to you.  You will not have to exit your vehicle at all, and will keep to a minimum the number of people in our building.   An ad will be placed in the Edina Sentinel for two weeks prior to the ceremony.

Other unfinished business—Diana had made a monetary donation in memory of Jean Ray, as Jean was a regular coffee drinker on Tuesday mornings before moving into the nursing home.  Diana was reimbursed from the senior citizen’s account  she donated.

New business was an announcement that this coming Tuesday, December 8, will be our annual Christmas snacks and treats day at coffee.  We will be joined by the Green Acres FCE.

Our next luncheon will be January 5, 2021.  Diana will make the birthday cake.  Tuesday coffee makers for the month will be Diana, Marsha, Judith, Kathryn, and Judith again the first Tuesday of January.

We wish all a very blessed Christmas season.

November 2020

November 5, 2020 saw the Novelty Senior Citizens’ meet for the monthly luncheon.  Diana had put up Thanksgiving decorations for the month, reminding us to be thankful for all our blessings.

Diana led the pledge, then Kathryn gave the invocation.  Present were Kathryn, Diana, Jim and Marsha, Judith, and Carolyn.

After clean-up by Diana and Judith, Diana brought the business meeting to order at 1:10.  Minutes were read and approved.  Treasurer’s report was given, and approved as presented. Judith paid Marsha for the advertisement listed below.

Unfinished business:

Wreaths Across America report:  We have 249 wreaths purchased, with 7 more ready to be sent in:  and two others have contacted that they wish to purchase.  So not a bad year considering circumstances with the COVID-19 pandemic.  Joyce is working on the ceremony, which is Dec ember 19, 2020 at 11:00 a.m.  It was discussed to have those that are picking up their wreath might stay in their vehicle instead of coming into the center, and having “runners” bring them out; which would discourage having quite a number in our small center at one time.

The soup luncheon and bake sale will be on Saturday, November 14th here at the center.  Serving between 11:00 a.m. -2:00 p.m.  For a free will donation, you can get a bowl of soup, dessert, and drink.  Volunteers were noted to bring various items for it or the bake sale.

An advertisement has been given to the Edina Sentinel for publication.  Fliers will be given out to local places for advertisement as well.

A family has asked to rent the center for Thanksgiving.

Next monthly meeting is December 3.  Judith will make the birthday pie for two regular attendees.  Coffee makers for Tuesday mornings are Diana, Marsha, Judith, and Kathryn.

 OCTOBER 2020 MONTHLY LUNCHEON

The Novelty Senior Citizens’ met Thursday, October 1 to celebrate the beginning of the month with their carry-in luncheon.  Phyllis Whitlatch of the KCHD was there to take blood pressures.  She also gave us the tentative time of the flu clinic (drive-through), depending on the availability/receipt of the serum.

No birthday celebrants were present, but we did think of Jeff Otto as he celebrates this month.  The Pledge was repeated by everyone, and Denis gave the blessing for the food.  Judith Rhoades, Denis and Dorothy Howard, Diana Cheatum (and “Punkin”), Kathryn Wilkerson, Carolyn Morgret, Jim and Marsha Pinson were there to enjoy the meal prepared by everyone:  a couple of mac & cheese, and several desserts along the chocolate variety, as well as a no bake pumpkin pie were among dishes prepared.

At 1:30, Diana called the business meeting to order.  The minutes from last month were read and approved, and had also been published in the Sentinel.  The treasurer presented the financial statement and it also was approved.

Marsha gave a report on the WAA project.  148 wreaths have been purchased, and 78 additional ones were purchased when the promotion was BOGO.  There are  nine   additional wreaths that have not yet been sent in.   Only this month to purchase one, so if you haven’t already done so…………….  Again, the ceremony will be Saturday, December 19, 2020 at the Novelty Christian Church, 11:00 a.m.  Joyce Simpson is in charge of organizing that ceremony.

New business included the motion to again have our deer hunter opening day soup luncheon.  Judith made motion that yes, we have it again, along with a bake sale.  Marsha seconded, passed.  Although final plans will be made next month, we will have 4 soups:  chili, potato, pizza, and ham and beans.  Dessert will also be furnished for a free will donation.  This event will be Saturday, November 14, with serving from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.  Bake sale items will also be there for you to indulge your sweet tooth!

Judith made motion to adjourn, Dorothy seconded.  November 5 birthday cake maker will be Diana, and weekly coffee makers were assigned
