June 2018 monthly luncheon

June 7, 2018 found twelve at the Novelty Senior Center to enjoy the carry in luncheon, which is held monthly. Jim & Marsha Pinson, Kathryn Wilkerson, Mildred Bragg, Karen Lumley, Allie Hemme, Helen Pulse, Diana Cheatum, Carolyn Morgret, Judith Rhoades, Denis and Dorothy Howard were present, with Sherry Goodwin of the KCHD arriving to take blood pressures, and check on various individual's health concerns.

President Diana led the pledge and then asked Jim to give the blessing. Happy Birthday was sung to Judith, who blew out the candle on the cake made by Marsha.

Leading the line to get the food is always the privilege of the birthday celebrant(s). Much good food was enjoyed, from homemade bread, meat dishes (including spare ribs), several vegetables and salads, and a number of desserts in addition to the birthday cake.

After cleanup by Karen and Judith, Diana called the business meeting to order, with seven staying for that. Minutes from last month's meeting were read and approved. Treasurer's report was given and approved as presented: (Helen made the motion, Kathryn seconded to approve the treasurer report).  A BIG thank you to the good Samaritan that mowed our yard the first time. We certainly appreciated it, and now have Lucas Cheatum to do this for us.
Old Business:
      1. Kathryn read an old-time article from the Sentinel from 1918 which told of the Memorial Day celebration in Novelty, with nearly the whole town gathering with “real” flowers and parading down to the cemetery, then back to the church for singing and tributes to the veterans. Kathryn remembers her mother talking about doing this.
      2. Marsha gave an update on WAA project: she has begun collecting money for wreaths. She will place an ad in the Sentinel to remind people that they may now begin sending money for wreath(s). She also placed it on her Facebook page, and on the Senior Center's blogsite: (check next entry for that information)
      3. The banners used on the parade vehicle and in the cemetery were retrieved from Kent and are stored at the Center.
      4. We have had several newcomers who have volunteered to help us out with this project: Jeannette , Walla , as well as Lynn  and Lois. We appreciate all offers of help!

New Business:
      1. Judith has not yet sent in the information/money for a booth at CornFest: she will do that within the month, and request we have the same spot as we've had in the past.
      2.  Several will look into replacing the air conditioner. It is old and noisy, and hasn't been used for a couple of years.  More discussion later.
      3. As there are no birthdays that we know of in July, no one will make a cake. (We always have desserts anyway) Coffee makers for the month were designated.  Next luncheon will be Thursday, July 5, 2018 here at the Center. We begin eating at noon!
Judith made motion to adjourn, Helen and Kathryn seconded. Meeting adjourned.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY CAKE recipe:
                            LEMON CREAM CHEESE DUMP CAKE

1- (16 oz) can lemon pie filling                   4 oz. cream cheese, cubed
1 (15 oz) pkge yellow cake mix                  1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter,
                                                                              thinly sliced

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and lightly grease a square baking dish with butter or non stick spray.
2.  Pour lemon pie filling into the bottom of greased baking dish, making sure to spread it into the corners.
3.  Top with 1/2 cake mix (dry).  Place cubed cream cheese evenly on top, the sprinkle remaining cake mix.
4.  Take butter pats (as thinly sliced as possible) and place them in a single layer on top of the cake mix, trying to cover as much of the surface of the cake as possible.
5,  Place baking dish in oven and bake for 35-40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
6.  Remove from oven and let cool 15-20 minutes before serving.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA

We are now accepting donations to sponsor wreaths in December for the Wreaths Across America project.  The ceremony will be December 15, 2018 in Novelty.

Wreaths are still just $15 per wreath, and should be available that day for pickup.

Checks should be made out to "Wreaths Across America"  if you want a record for charitable-giving purposes.  Send to Novelty Senior Center, PO Box 65, Novelty, MO 63460.  Please note if they are "grave specific"--for a particular veteran's gravesite, or for a specific cemetery.  We always try to cover all veterans in the Novelty Cemetery, and in the past have covered all in Locust Hill, Mt. Salem, and Bee Ridge cemeteries as well.  Most have also been decorated with a wreath in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Edina.

Military boots are in three locations in Edina businesses, and change, bills, or checks may be placed in those.  (They are at Lucky's Cafe, Blue Room, and Casey's, but will rotate them to other establishments through the summer.)

Thank you in advance for helping us Remember our deceased veterans.

Honor our Veterans

Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May.  This year it will be celebrated on Saturday, May 19, 2018.  Thanks to President Harry S Truman, it’s a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces. President Truman led the effort to establish a holiday in order for citizens to unite and to honor our military heroes for their patriotic service in support of the United States of America.

MAY 2018 LUNCHEON/BUSINESS MEETING

The Novelty Senior Citizens met May 3, 2018 for their monthly luncheon. And we are SOOO glad that spring is here! Judith had made another centerpiece for the food table—with flowers, etc.

Nurse Sherry Goodwin came, took blood pressures, and inquired about health issues. Last month she had told of a class on “balance” offered in Edina—and two Novelty seniors are attending it.

Kathryn led the pledge, and then gave the invocation. Happy Birthday was sung to Marsha and Denis: they blew out the candles on the cake made by Dorothy.

Those attending the luncheon were Diana Cheatum, Denis and Dorothy Howard, Jim and Marsha Pinson, Judith Rhoades, Kathryn Wilkerson, and Helen Pulse.
After cleanup (mostly by Judith), Kathryn opened the business meeting. Marsha read the minutes to last month's meeting and they were approved as read. Judith gave the treasurer's report, and it was also approved as presented. A couple checks had not yet cleared the bank. The electric bill is now on a budget plan and will be the same each month: bill was just received today.

In old business:
  1. We have received a thank you note from Mildred, for the group sending her a birthday card.
  2. Per last month's minutes, we were disappointed in the spring fundraiser--the sausage/biscuit/gravy breakfast held the day before Easter.  Diana suggested that perhaps we have a spring fundraiser at a different time other than day before Easter. She also suggested (so as not to conflict with the restaurant) perhaps having an evening meal, such as spaghetti. We will think about this and decide later.
  3. Kathryn has contacted Sid about the door, but he has been busy out of town so has not yet looked at it. Hopefully know more next month.
New business:
  1. Kathryn resigned as president of this organization due to being gone nearly half the year. It was decided that Diana will take over as President, and Kathryn will be Vice-President (they will just change positions).
  2. Diana will contact Lucas to see if he would mow our small area for us.  The grass has grown enough now that it definitely needs mowing.
  3. Marsha brought the information about the Hurdland 4th of July vendors. Vendors must pay this year for a spot to set up. As we had very few donations for the Wreaths Across America project last year at Hurdland, it was decided to not have a booth there.
  4. Judith has received the information about the CornFest. She was given permission to go ahead and send that in whenever she decides.
  5. Our float that we have used the past couple years (big wreath) has been sold so we would not have that. We will decide if we want to have an entry in the parades at each of the above events.
  6. Marsha will make the birthday cake in June when we will celebrate at least two birthdays. Coffee makers for the month were assigned.
  7. Next luncheon/meeting will be June 7.
