Aug. luncheon and Planning for the CornFest

Novelty Sr. Citizens' met Thursday August 1 for the monthly luncheon. Present were Kathryn Wilkerson, Diana Cheatum, Denis and Dorothy Howard, Helen Pulse, Judith Rhoades, Sue Ahern, Carolyn Morgret, and Marsha Pinson. KCHD nurse Sherry Goodwin was also there to check blood pressures, 02 levels, and inquire of other health issues.

Kathryn is an August birthday celebrant, and Happy Birthday was sung to her.

Judith had made a lemon chiffon cake. Pledge of allegiance was recited by all, then Denis gave the blessing. A few people had a tough time getting their food prepared at home as their electricity had gone off around the time they were preparing it: by using the stove at the center, all was fine.

Judith and Carolyn took care of the cleanup after the meal. Kathryn then conducted the business meeting as president Diana had to leave early.

Minutes of the June meeting (no meeting in July) were read by secretary Marsha and were approved as presented. Judith gave the treasurer's report: it too was approved.

WAA project: Marsha reported that we have 252 wreaths thus far, (112 are those purchased in May to respond to the BOGO incentive for that month. She has the money for 1 more wreath at this point. Letters to businesses in the county are ready to be mailed out this week.  A sign up sheet was passed around for people to mark when they would work the booth at theSep. 7 Cornfest.

Diana had checked with Frank's Plumbing/Appliance for air conditioners: she had measured the space now used by our old one.  We tabled any decision, and will try to get a few more bids on this project.

Carolyn will make the birthday cake for September 5 (at least one birthday). Coffee makers for the upcoming month are:

A delicious recipe!

Judith had brought apple dumplings to the carry-in on Thursday.  Jim, Jeff and Ronnie (as well as others) really liked them:  so she sent it to me.  Jim said to tell her she can bring them to the luncheon any time!!!!!  Since I occasionally add recipes to the blog, I'll put this one on:

                                               APPLE DUMPLINGS

2 Granny Smith apples
2  8 oz cans crescent rolls
1 cup (2 sticks) butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
1   12 oz can Mountain Dew
ground cinnamon to taste
vanilla  or cinnamon ice cream for serving

Peel and core the apples into 8 equal wedges
Wrap each wedge in 1 piece of the crescent dough, beginning at wide end.
Place seam side down in buttered 8"x10" pan
Melt butter over low heat.  Add sugar and vanilla.  Stir for few seconds.                         (You want the mixture to be grainy.)
  Pour over rolls.
Pour Mountain Dew over top.  Sprinkle with cinnamon.
Bake 40 minutes in 350 degree oven or until golden brown.

May substitute peaches, pears or apricot slices.
May substitute ginger ale or lemon-lime soda for Mountain Dew.
