July 2020 luncheon

On Thursday, July 2, 2020, the Novelty Senior Citizens met for their monthly luncheon.  The center was decorated for the Independence Day celebration in red, white, and blue colors, flowers and flags.  This hot and humid day found Denis and Dorothy Howard; Jim and Marsha Pinson; Judith Rhoades, Diana Cheatum, Kathryn Wilkerson, and Carolyn Morgret present.  Health department was there for blood pressures, etc, but did not stay for lunch.

Pledge was recited and Denis gave the invocation.   No birthdays this month to celebrate, but Diana had made a red velvet cake just in case.

After cleanup by Kathryn, Carolyn, and Diana, Diana called the business meeting to order.  Minutes were read by secretary Marsha and approved as read.  Judith gave the treasurer's report which was also approved as presented.

Business discussed:

1.  Carolyn and Diana had gone to Sam's in Quincy looking for an air conditioner for the Center.  The one that had been discussed last month was not in stock.  Diana will make another trip to Sam's, in Columbia this time, to try to find it there.

2.  Diana had brought the poem she has chosen to be placed on the memorial plaque for her mother.  She's still looking for a particular picture to use.  The frame is already at the center awaiting her picture.

3.  Wreaths Across America date of the ceremony is set for Saturday December 19, 2020, 11:00 a.m at the Novelty Christian Church.  Joyce will again serve as the location chairperson, getting the ceremony lined up.  Marsha is the fundraising group chairperson.  We had a good month in January as WAA gave the BOGO promotion.  Letters will go to local businesses in August.   At this time we are planning on having a booth at the CornFest in Edina September 12. (if they indeed have the Cornfest and room available to set up).  More on this next month, or by the end of this month.

4.  The Historical Society has chances to purchase on a quilt--they will give it away at the Shop Edina event in December.  Judith had also brought her "Irish Chain" quilt top she'd made to show....very pretty top.

5.  Next month's luncheon will be August 6.  Carolyn will make the cake for those celebrating birthdays.  Coffee makers for the Tuesday gatherings were assigned.

Judith moved to adjourn the meeting at 1:50

June 4th luncheon

June 4, 2020, the Novelty Senior Citizens’ met for the monthly luncheon.  Present were Denis and Dorothy Howard, Diana Cheatum, Judith Rhoades, Marsha Pinson, and Carolyn Morgret.
Diana led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Denis gave the opening prayer.  The health department was busy, packing up for their move to the new building on Monday.  Hopefully they can make it next month.
Happy Birthday was sung to Judith as her birthday is the end of the month.  Carolyn had made the cake for her.

Happy Birthday Judith!!!!

At 1:30, Diana opened the business meeting after cleanup from lunch.   Marsha read the minutes which were approved as corrected.  Judith gave the treasurer’s report which was also approved as presented.
Business:
Ronald Rhoades has been mowing the yard.  We appreciate his work for us.
Other business included discussion of a new air conditioner.  The one we have is very old and noisy, and we are sure it is not energy efficient.  We had talked last year of replacing it, but found that the new ones would most likely not fit in the wall space that this one does without a lot of work.  Marsha had looked online for stand-alone air conditioners., primarily from Sam’s Club.  No difficult installation is needed as it vents through a window and can be moved to storage in the winter time.  Motion made and approved to purchase one similar to this from Sam’s Club.  Diana is a member, so she will get it there (price reflected had to be a Sam’s club member).
Although Hurdland has decided to go ahead with their Independence Day celebration, we will not participate, as last year they instigated a “vendor’s fee” for anyone who sets up….and we had not been making enough to make it worth our  time to do that.  We are still selling wreaths for $15 per wreath.  Deadline is October 31.  We will sell wreaths at the Corn Fest in Edina in September.  Plans are to send a letter to businesses during July/August.
Coffee makers for the next month are June 9—Diana; 16—Judith; 23—Marsha; 30—Kathryn.   Diana will bake the birthday cake for the July luncheon, even though we do not know of any birthdays during that month.  That luncheon will be July 2.
Judith made motion to adjourn at 2:05.

MAY MONTHLY LUNCHEON

After a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Novelty Senior Center met Thursday, May 7, for the monthly luncheon. The Health dept was still on staff schedule of only half of them working each day, so were unable to come to check blood pressures, etc. Hopefully all will be back to “normal” next month. Diana led the pledge, and Jeff gave the blessing before “happy birthday” was sung to Denis and Marsha. Carolyn made a chocolate cake for the candles, and also a cherry cheesecake dessert to help in their celebrations.
birthday celebrants Marsha and Denis.

Those present were Jeff and Leah Otto, Diana Cheatum, Denis and Dorothy Howard, Judith Rhoades, Marsha Pinson, Carolyn Morgret, Kathryn Wilkerson, and Terri Wilkerson. A delicious carry-in meal, with roast beef, fried chicken, spare ribs, chicken and dressing casserole, 3 offerings for deviled eggs, two pans of rolls, two pea and lettuce salads, plus more desserts than mentioned above! Several of us were thinking along the same lines!

After Terri and others managed the cleanup, a business meeting was held. Diana conducted the meeting.
Marsha read the minutes to the March meeting; Dorothy made a motion to approve them, Judith seconded, approved.
Judith gave the April and May treasurer's report; Carolyn made motion to approve, Dorothy seconded. Approved.

Business reports:
  1. Diana has received her check for reimbursement for new snow shovel.
  2. WAA report: This year's ceremony will be Saturday, December 19, 2020, 11:00 a.m. at the church. Two wreaths have been purchased that have not yet been sent in. We will be collecting money through the end of October for those.
  3. A note was received from Weldon Woodward regarding mowing; however other arrangements have already been made.

Next month's luncheon will be Thursday, June 2. Carolyn will again make the cake for those two celebrants that we know.

Coffee makers for the month were assigned.

After a bit more visiting, we were adjourned.
