Wreaths are still $15 each.  They will be here to be placed on a veteran's grave December 17, 2022.  Please know you can make them "grave specific" if you desire.  If going to a cemetery other than Novelty, Locust Hill, or Mt. Salem, it would need to be picked up that afternoon at the Novelty Senior Center, 105 N 3rd, Novelty, MO.  Contact the Senior Center at the preceding address to order one before October 31.  Thank you.

                                 JUNE 2022 LUNCHEON/BUSINESS MEETING

The Novelty Senior Citizens met Thursday, June 2, 2022 for the monthly luncheon.  Carolyn had sent the birthday cake as she was unable to be at here today.  After the pledge and prayer, Happy Birthday was sung to Judith whose birthday is at the end of the month.  Jim and Marsha; Dorothy, Denis, and David; Judith, Edra, and Diana were all present to enjoy the food and fellowship.

                                                   Blowing out her candle!

After cleanup, Diana called the business meeting to order.  Marsha read the minutes to the May meeting.  Judith seconded her motion to approve.  Motion passed.   Judith then gave the financial report for the month.  Marsha seconded her motion to approve them.  Motion passed.

In unfinished business:

1.    We still had only one estimate on the new eaves, guttering, and leaf filters.  Judith made a motion to take the Memphis Guttering Estimate so we can get this done.  Edra seconded.  Motion passed.  Jim will take care of contacting them.

2.    Discussion about a monetary donation to the Novelty Church youth group.   After finding the cost of various camps, and more discussion, it was decided  by vote to simply say “thank you” (which a card has already been sent).

3.    Sue Ahern has passed away.  She was a regular coffee attendee as well as coming to the luncheons when she was here and able to drive.  Marsha made the motion to give a  donation in her memory to wherever the family decides.  Motion passed.

There are no birthdays in July, so no one was volunteered to bring a birthday cake next month (we always have desserts there anyway.)  We will have an August birthday.   Coffee makers for the month are June 7—Diana; 14—Marsha; 21—Judith; 28—Kathryn.

Judith moved to adjourn the meeting.

Sunday, May 15, 2022

The Novelty Senior Citizens’ met for the monthly luncheon on May 5, 2022, which seemed a dreary, drab day.   After the pledge was recited, Jim gave the blessing.  Happy Birthday was sung to Marsha with a “spring” cake made by Judith.   We missed having Denis there to celebrate HIS birthday this month.

Diana called the business meeting to order afterwards.  The minutes were read by Marsha, seconded by David and approved as read.  Judith gave the treasurer’s report, seconded by Dorothy, and approved as presented.

Marsha had sent a thank you note to the Novelty Church youth thanking them for picking up the wreaths.  Discussion followed as to whether we needed to send a monetary gift of appreciation.  Judith will contact Paul and we can decide next month (it could perhaps be used as a “scholarship” for summer camp?)

Marsha presented an estimate from Memphis Seamless Gutter for new gutters to be installed with a leaf filter.  Judith will try to get another estimate from a company in Kirksville.  Hopefully we can make a decision on this next month as well.

Diana mentioned that Helen Pulse will be celebrating her 90th birthday in September.  As she used to be a regular at our coffee time, we decided to make sure to invite her to the luncheon and have a card signed by all for her.

Carolyn will make the cake for June.  Coffee makers for the month are: May 10—Diana,  17—Marsha;  24—Judith;  31—Kathryn

Judith moved to adjourn, David seconded.  Meeting adjourned.

APRIL 2022 MONTHLY LUNCHEON AND MEETING

The senior citizens of Novelty met Thursday, April 7 for the monthly luncheon.  At 12: 15, Diana led the pledge of allegiance, then Denis gave the invocation.  Present were Denis, Dorothy, David, Judith, Edra, Carolyn, Diana, Jim, and Marsha.  There were no birthday celebrations this month, although the “birthday cake” was there, with recipe below.   A nice variety of meats and veggies were brought as well as several different salads and desserts.

After cleanup by Edra and Diana, the business meeting was called to order.  Marsha read the minutes from last month, which were approved as read.  Judith gave the treasurer’s report which was also approved as presented.  She had noted that the REC bill was only $22  this month to adjust the yearly payments that had been made.

Unfinished business:

1.     Judith noted that this coming fiscal year, the REC will again do the monthly payment, but the following year it will be adjusted monthly.   More details later as she learns more about how that will work.

2.    Guttering.  Judith’s grandson, J.C., said his company puts in the leaf filters, but not new guttering, of which we believe needs replacing also.  Jim will try to contact the place south of Memphis, and Judith will get the name/number of a company in Kirksville that does that work; so hopefully we can get two estimates on getting that project finished.

3.    Wreath pick-ups.  Cleva and Larry had picked up St. Joseph; Bee Ridge has taken care of theirs; Novelty Church Youth had picked up the Novelty cemetery wreaths (and they had been placed at Carroll Wilkerson’s farm).  Diana, Doug and Debbie had picked up Mt. Salem.  Shirley Hall said she’d take care of Locust Hill’s.

New Business:  Marsha will write a thank-you note to the Novelty Youth group for picking up the wreaths.  Discussion on whether we should make a donation to the group for their help.  Judith will talk to Paul to get his opinion.

Judith will make the cake for May.  Coffee makers will be April 12—Diana; 19—Marsha; 25—Judith; May 3—Kathryn.

Judith made motion to adjourn; seconded by David.  Meeting adjourned.

                            CAKE for dessert

(a nice, "spring-like" cake that is super-easy to make!)

1 box angel food cake mix

20 oz can of crushed pineapple

Use a box of angel food cake mix-- (just the dry mix, no need to follow directions on the box)      Combine it with a 20 ounce can of crushed pineapple in its own juice.                                                    No need to use a mixer, just stir by hand.  When you do this, something "magical" happens!  The mixture starts to froth and it turns into an amazingly airy, fluffy bowl of deliciousness right before your eyes.  Once it is all mixed up, simply pour it into a 9 x 13 baking dish and bake it at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.      Nice served with cool-whip or perhaps a sherbet.

                            FINALLY....

The Novelty Senior Citizens’ got to have a monthly meeting—first time this year!  On March 3, 2022, they met at the Senior Center for the carry-in dinner and business meeting.  Eight were present, with a couple sending their regrets as they felt “under the weather”.  Diana led the pledge and Denis gave the blessing for the food.  We sang Happy Birthday to Dorothy and David, and they blew out candles on a delicious pineapple upside down cake made by Edra.

We also celebrated Jim and Edra as their birthdays were in January but they both felt it was too far past their celebrations.  Others present were Marsha and Judith.  The center was decorated with Irish green decorations.  We all decided we very much ready for spring to get here!

At 1:15, Diana called the business meeting to order.  Marsha read “minutes” from December, January, and February which were posted on our blogsite.  After her motion to approve all of them, Judith seconded.  Motion passed.  Judith then gave the treasurer’s report.  She had deposited a check from WAA for the first month’s wreaths purchased.  Dorothy seconded Judith’s motion to approve the treasurer’s report.  Motion carried.

Unfinished business:

1.     A re-wrap of the WAA BoGo promotion.  We sold 141 wreaths during that time frame.  All of Bee Ridge and St. Aloysius cemeteries are already covered.  We feel that Novelty, Mt. Salem, and Locust Hill will all be covered as well after the December ceremony.    Also a reminder has been placed on Facebook for individuals to pick up their wreaths from the 2021 ceremony before the first mowing of the cemetery.   Novelty youth group will be contacted soon to pick up that cemetery.

2.    No one has been contacted yet about the guttering on the building.  Judith’s grandson works for Orkin and they also do that type work, so she will have him give an estimate for what we might need.

3.    We will not have a spring breakfast:  none has been had the last couple years due to the pandemic.  Before that, we felt it was a great deal of work and not many came to help support it other than  those who generally attend our activities.

Marsha will make the birthday cake for April, with Judith making it in May.  Coffee makers for the month will be  8th—Marsha; 15th—Judith; 22—Diana; 29-Marsha;  April 5—Judith.

Judith made motion to adjourn, Denis seconded.  Meeting adjourned.  Glad to have Edra come join us:  and she’s been coming to coffee as well!

😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

We will truly miss friends Jeff and Leah Otto, who passed away this past month.  They rarely missed a luncheon when they were residing here at Novelty.  Condolences to their children and grandchildren.

                                             AGAIN POSTPONED!!

The monthly luncheon for February will again be postponed this month due to the weather conditions.  We've had several inches of snow, and blowing winds which has caused drifted side roads, and single-digit temperatures.

Stay safe everyone, and hope we can have it next month.  No February birthdays to celebrate, but we can hope to celebrate the January birthdays as well as March birthdays next month.

THEME FOR 2022 WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA CEREMONY

“You don’t have to be in military service to serve your community and country,” said Karen Worcester, executive director, Wreaths Across America. “Serving others, or being in service to others, gives purpose and I’ve seen first-hand from Gold Star Families to Veterans, how it can help people heal.”
