Thank You, KCES and 5th Grade Leadership Team!

Knox County Elementary Fifth grade Leadership Team organized a day for all students in their building to wear a hat....simply by paying $1.00. A majority of the students took advantage of this—some wearing ball caps, cowboy hats, helmets, etc. The fundraising money was then donated to the Novelty Senior Citizens' for their Wreaths Across America project.  The Senior Center is hopeful to have a wreath for each veteran in the Novelty Cemetery, plus many others throughout the county.

These students presented the money to Marsha Pinson, Thursday afternoon, September 29th. Collected was enough money to purchase 9 wreaths. Those students are also invited to attend our ceremony in December and help place the wreaths on veterans' graves.

Thank You, Leadership Team, for organizing this day. And thanks to all the Elementary Students who purchased the privilege of wearing a hat!

Shown are the 5th grade Leadership Team presenting the money collected to Marsha Pinson.

2016 Corn Fest has come and gone...

Thank You to everyone who stopped by our booth for a chat and to those who
sponsored wreaths for the ceremony in December.
Judith Rhoades, Marsha Pinson, Gala Jessen, Barbara Poor,
Kathryn Wilkerson, Wende Wagner and Tom Bailey were on hand to share details about
Wreaths Across America with those in attendance.{ A big Thank You to KF for helping with EVERYTHING, a true McGuyver!}

The Novelty Senior Center was represented in the parade by our float
which included Barbara Poor, Kathryn Wilkerson and Sue Ahern.
Of course Snoopy was there to the delight of everyone.
Snoopy and a group of student missionaries from Truman State University with the Catholic Newman Center. They are active in their faith and love God. They really loved the trailer of corn!

September 1st was our monthly luncheon!

Thursday was our monthly luncheon for any seniors in the Novelty area.
Diana led the pledge to the US flag, and Helen Pulse blew out the candles on the birthday cake. Jeff gave the blessing for the meal that was prepared by all who attended. Besides those mentioned above, Leah Otto, Jim and Marsha Pinson, Sue Ahern, Judith Rhoades, and Pam Baker were present. Nurse Sherry Goodwin was also present to take blood pressures, etc.

This month's birthday girl!

Thanks to Judith for doing the dishes: then a business meeting was conducted. Those staying for the meeting were Helen, Sue, Judith, Diana, and Marsha. Vice President Diana Cheatum called the meeting to order. Updated information on the WAA program was shared, and the upcoming Cornfest festivities were discussed.  We will again have the float in the parade on Saturday morning, and the booth will be in the city park during the weekend.  We are hoping to get a number of wreaths sponsored during this weekend, September 9-10-11.

I am sorry!  I was negligent in getting a post on from the August luncheon.  We celebrated four birthdays that month--so a belated Happy Birthday to Kathryn, Jerry, Freda, and Leah. (and no, I did not get their picture either.)

The Knox County Cornfest is Sept 9-11 in Edina Missouri.  We invite all to come join the fun there--the Novelty Senior Citizens will have a float in the parade as well as a booth for WAA.  The Cornfest is putting out a cookbook, and the birthday cake pictured, is one of the recipes from that book:
             CHOCOLATE SHEET CAKE
Cake                                                        Icing
2 cups sugar                                     1 stick oleo
2 cups flour                                       4 Tbsp cocoa
1 tsp baking soda                             6 Tbsp buttermilk
1/2 tsp salt                                        1 1# box powdered sugar
2 sticks oleo                                      1 tsp vanilla
3-4 Tbsp. cocoa
1 cup water
1/2 cup buttermilk

Sift together the sugar, flour, baking soda, and alt.  Meanwhile melt in a saucepan the oleo, cocoa, and water.  bringing to a rapid boil.
Pour over the dry ingredients; mix in the buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla.  Pour in a 11 x 15 greased baking pan.  Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes.
For the icing: Melt in a saucepan the oleo, cocoa, and buttermilk and bring to a boil.  Add the powdered sugar and vanilla.  Mix til smooth and pour over the cake.
