Thursday, April 7, 2016, is Carry-in Dinner.
It is potluck and we will celebrate April birthdays.
See you at 11:00 AM.

Don't forget Senior Coffee, Tuesday mornings 9:00 to 11:00 AM.
Meet new people, have tea or coffee and socialize a bit.

Registration forms will be available soon for upcoming Day Trips.  Payments are accepeted, but must be paid in full 3 days before each trip.

REMEMBER!  HONOR!  TEACH!  A remembrance to our veterans.

 

   He was getting old and paunchy

 And his hair was falling fast,

 And he sat around the Legion,

 Telling stories of the past.

 

 Of a war that he once fought in

 And the deeds that he had done,

 In his exploits with his buddies;

 They were heroes, every one.

 

 And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors

 His tales became a joke,

 All his buddies listened quietly

 For they knew where of he spoke.

 

 But we'll hear his tales no longer,

 For ol' Joe has passed away,

 And the world's a little poorer

 For a Veteran died today.

 

 He won't be mourned by many,

 Just his children and his wife.

 For he lived an ordinary,

 Very quiet sort of life.

 

 He held a job and raised a family,

 Going quietly on his way;

 And the world won't note his passing,

 'Tho a Veteran died today.

 

 When politicians leave this earth,

 Their bodies lie in state,

 While thousands note their passing,

 And proclaim that they were great.

 

 Papers tell of their life stories

 From the time that they were young,

 But the passing of a Veteran

 Goes unnoticed, and unsung.

 

 Is the greatest contribution

 To the welfare of our land,

 Some jerk who breaks his promise

 And cons his fellow man?

 

 Or the ordinary fellow

 Who in times of war and strife,

 Goes off to serve his country

 And offers up his life?

 

 The politician's stipend

 And the style in which he lives,

 Are often disproportionate,

 To the service that he gives.

 

 While the ordinary Veteran,

 Who offered up his all,

 Is paid off with a medal

 And perhaps a pension, small.

 

 It is not the politicians

 With their compromise and ploys,

 Who won for us the freedom

 That our country now enjoys.

 

 Should you find yourself in danger,

 With your enemies at hand,

 Would you really want some cop-out,

 With his ever-waffling stand?

 

 Or would you want a Veteran

 His home, his country, his kin,

 Just a common Veteran,

 Who would fight until the end.

 

 He was just a common Veteran,

 And his ranks are growing thin,

 But his presence should remind us

 We may need his likes again.

 

 For when countries are in conflict,

 We find the Veteran's part,

 Is to clean up all the troubles

 That the politicians start.

 

 If we cannot do him honour

 While he's here to hear the praise,

 Then at least let's give him homage

 At the ending of his days.

 

 Perhaps just a simple headline

 In the paper that might say:

 

 

 "OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,

 A VETERAN DIED TODAY."

 

Take the time today to thank a Vietnam Era Veteran.  Many, many came home to NO thanks, and some to hostile environments--through no fault of their own:  they were simply doing their jobs.  No matter what your feelings concerning this police action, do not blame the veterans who served.  Today, just thank them for doing that.  God Bless.


And along with this, the Novelty Senior Center will be sponsoring a Wreaths Across America ceremony in December in KNOX COUNTY.  If you desire to purchase a wreath for a deceased veteran, please call Marsha at 660-216-1021. 

Seniors On The Loose!

You will never guess what the Senior Center is up to now!!

  * * * * * *Seniors On The LOOSE! * * * * * * 
This is a new idea and we hope it catches on.  It is open to anyone interested in travel.
Every other month we are planning a trip.  It might be local or it might have some mileage involved.

APRIL/MAY

Our plans include a trip to GOWER to view the beautiful
COMNACHE IRIS GARDENS. www.comancheacresiris.com
The gardens , all 15 acres, will be in gorgeous color.  Bring your cameras.

Owner Jim Hedgecock will give us a date soon, so plan for late April/ early May for this trip.
There will be a small fee for gas expenses, and lunch has yet to be decided.  We have a choice: Bring a sack lunch,  lunch in Cameron or a local diner.  Please share your thoughts on this.

Fees and reservations must be in advance.  This helps the planning process go smoothly.
Walking involved, as much or a little as you like.

JUNE

June 8, 2016,  Day Trip planned to OSBORN, MISSOURI, to tour the SHATTO MILK DAIRY FARM. www.shattomilk.com
 Fees and registration must be in advance.  Walking involved through the processing plant, the barn and the tasting room.
Lunch to be decided.  WE  will meet at 7:45 AM and leave promptly at 8:00 AM. Our tour time is 10:30 AM.

And.......We are off and running!

It was a nice day in Novelty, a bit over cast and a gentle breeze, as we hosted over 40 people for breakfast...

Family, friends, new and familiar faces enjoyed plenty of goooood biscuits & gravy with sausage.  To top it off,  fresh fruit.

 Bake Sale:  We had the cutest bunny face cake, angel food cake, an Easter cake with jelly beans, cinnamon carmel rolls, fresh strawberry pies, peach pies, cherry pies, apple pies, blackberry pies and mmmm... a hickory nut pie and pecan pies.  Five  loaves of white bread that went very fast, as well as the homemade dinner rolls and crescent rolls,
           Our senior ladies can bake!



We forgot to take photos of the table heaped with baked goods, pies, and cakes.
How successful is a Bake Sale when it looks like this?

Wreaths Across America - A sponsorship program to place fresh wreaths on veterans graves in the Novelty Cemetery and Locust Hill Cemetery.  www.wreathsacrossamerica.org.  We have a fundraising page on this site.  If you use the site to donate a wreath or just add sponsorship, you must include our group number and cemetery number.  If the numbers are not included the wreaths will NOT be specified for Novelty.  We also have American flag lapel pins for sale for $1 each and we hope everyone wears one to the ceremony and wreath laying in December, 2016.

Novelty City-Wide Garage/Yard Sale - The Senior Center will have lunch for sale during the sale. The date is yet to be determined.  Also on an ealier blog post. We are making arrangements for those in the country to come into town and set up a sale.  We will also be taking donations at the center.

...With everyone updated on the local news, seeing their neighbors, friends, and family, we called it a  day and wished everyone a Happy Easter.

We invite everyone back for our annual soup dinner, opening day of deer season, in the Fall.
