NOVEMBER, 2018 LUNCHEON and BUSINESS MEETING

Novelty Senior Citizens met for the monthly luncheon on Thursday, November 1. The Center was decorated for Halloween and fall. Sherry Goodwin, KCHD, came to check blood pressures. She reiterated tips for avoiding the flu this year, including getting the flu shot. She informally asked how we liked having the clinic come to us instead of in Edina (like it did last month). Those present to take advantage of her services were Denis and Dorothy Howard, Helen Pulse, Diana Cheatum, Judith Rhoades, and Marsha Pinson.

Diana led the pledge to the U.S. Flag, then Denis gave the blessing for the food. No birthdays this month, but all enjoyed all the delicious food and desserts there. Judith had prepared a new recipe of Lime Triangles (recipe below). Banana pie and chocolate pie were also indulged in by those present. Of course we also had roast beef, meatballs, and chicken and stuffing casserole, as well as noodles, sweet potatoes, three bean salad, and deviled eggs to name some of the available foods.

After cleanup (thanks, Judith), Diana called the business meeting to order.
Marsha read the minutes to last month's meeting.   Judith distributed the treasurer's report.

Unfinished/Old Business:
  1. WAA: The survey flags were put in the Novelty cemetery last Saturday, instead of Oct 15 as reported in last month's minutes. Judith did this task by herself (took about 1 ½ hours), and we were all grateful to her for doing that.
  2. Marsha and Judith were on KMEM radio “coffee break” in October and had received some good input to it. Neither reported being as nervous as they had been the year before.
  3. As of this date, we have 221 wreaths paid for: although our date is passed, we know we are getting 51 more wreaths as those people have contacted Marsha. This is more wreaths than were purchased last year, so we feel it has been a success (although we were doubtful just a month ago!)
  4. Soup luncheon: Sentinel ad has been taken in and paid for, and it is on the Mark Twain website homepage. A couple of “tweaks” to the menu were made. Marsha brought her bake sale stuff today—cake in a mug (includes mug, recipe, and dry ingredients to make an individual serving). Also a cook booklet with 17 recipes for other cake-in-a-mug recipes. The soup cans for advertising the soup luncheon will be placed by  Diana.  Other signs will also be placed that morning.
  5. Judith will make a pie (instead of a cake) for birthday celebrants in December (we have two, and pie was requested instead of a cake). The date for next month's meeting will be December 6th

And now, here's the recipe for Lime Coconut Triangles!!!!  Try them!!!!
     prep time:  25 minutes

    1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup finely chopped coconut, divided
    1/3 cup confectioners' sugar
     1/4 cup finely chopped pecans
    1/3 cup butter, melted
    2 eggs
    1 cup sugar
    1/4 cup lime juice
    1-1/2 teaspoons grated lime peel
    1/4 teaspoon baking powder
    Additional confectioners' sugar
In a small bowl, combine the flour, 1/4 cup coconut, confectioners' sugar and pecans.  Stir in butter.  Press into a greased 8" square baking dish.  Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, whisk the eggs.  Stir in the sugar, lime juice, lime peel, baking powder, and remaining coconut.  Pour over crust.

Bake for 15-20 minutes or until edges are light golden brown.  Cool on a wire rack.  Dust with the additional confectioner's sugar.  Cut into squares; cut in half to make triangles.  Yield:  1 1/2 dozen triangles.

    MMMMMM!!!!!

October, 2018 luncheon

October 4th, 2018 found the Novelty Senior Citizens again gathering for their monthly luncheon. We were pleased to have the KCHD staff (Phyllis, Debbie, Becky, and Lori) all there to also have their mobile flu vaccine clinic that day (from noon-1:30 pm). It was a chilly day so they brought their equipment inside the center. Unfortunately no one other than those present at the luncheon came in to get their flu shot. But it was nice to have it conveniently located for those of us who DID get it!

The pledge was led by Diana, and the blessing given by Dorothy. Happy Birthday was sung to Becky (although she didn't want a cake or blow out candles!) Dorothy had made the cake. Other seniors there were Judith, Sue, Helen, Denis, and Marsha.

At 1:45: Diana began the business meeting. Marsha read the minutes to last month's meeting. Helen moved to approve them, Judith seconded. Approved as read. Judith then gave the treasurer report. Dorothy moved to approve, Sue seconded. Approved as presented.

Business:
  1. Marsha reported on the WAA project. We have 109 wreaths sold at this point. About 20 short for the Novelty cemetery. Surveyor flags will be placed at the Novelty cemetery on all veterans' graves (to make it easier to find in December) on Saturday, October 13. Marsha and Judith will be on KMEM radio “coffee break” on Monday, October 15 to talk about the Wreaths project—they had done this last year as well.  The ceremony will be Saturday, December 15, 2018 in Novelty.
  2. Soup luncheon and bake sale will be November 10—the first day of firearms deer season. Soups that will be served are chili; cheesy broccoli; potato soup deluxe; pizza soup. Relish tray, crackers. sour cream, shredded cheese. Pies will be for dessert.  Everyone will bring things for the bake sale. It will be advertised in the Edina Sentinel, on the Mark Twain website, and on Marsha's facebook page as well.
  3. No birthdays are known in November so no one is designated to bring the birthday cake next month.
  4. Coffee makers were designated for each Tuesday of this month.
  5. Next luncheon will be November 1.  We certainly invite all to join us on that first Thursday of the month to eat....we always have plenty, so you could come the first time without bringing anything!!!!!!  👌👩 👪

CORNFEST 2018

Well, Cornfest is over.  Was it a success?  Fairly good I suppose.
It was showering all Friday, and we decided if it was raining, we would not go.  Saturday morning came and it was just showering, so we decided to go ahead and set up, but not in time for the first shift to work.

Judith had all supplies needed except for the canopy which had been set up the evening before.  When she got there, she luckily found a parking space fairly close and unloaded.  The canopy was not in good shape from the wind/rain the night before.  Some extra work needed to be done so the top would stay up.  Thankful for friends who helped!!!

We were also thankful for Lois Browning and Walla DeRosear, who volunteered to help out in the booth.  They "officially" began their shift at 10:00 a.m.  Judith and  Marsha were also there.  Lynn VanDolah had been scheduled to work the 8-10 a.m. shift, and did stop by to see if we needed her.  Thank you Lynn for offering and we will need your help in December!!!

I know I should have taken some pictures, but it showered off and on all morning...not hard, but enough to make it miserable...especially with the northeast wind blowing fairly steadily. Several workers had on their winter jackets, and all had SOMETHING warmer than just shirt sleeves!  But amazingly enough, the ground did not get muddy as we stood/walked in the booth...although nearly all reported cold feet!

Judith had let several workers know the evening before we would quite likely NOT set up, so she and Marsha manned the booth the rest of the day.  Rain began falling harder about 1:30 or so, and by 2:15, the booths around us were going ahead and closing up, so we decided to do that as well.  Crowd was very sparse by that time.

But with all that, we did get enough for 24 more wreaths (most of those grave-specific).  After Tuesday's coffee, enough was sent in for 37 more wreaths, making our total at this point 98 wreaths.  This is below our goal, so if you haven't yet purchased a wreath, please send to Novelty Senior Citizen's PO Box 65 Novelty MO  63460.  They are $15 per wreath and please specify if you wish it to be grave specific or for a particular cemetery.  Thank you.

We also had a raffle for a toque.  The  stocking cap was designed with the USA in mind--stars and stripes in red, white and blue.  It was hand-knitted by Jana, who lives in Canada, although she grew up here in Novelty.  We thank her so much for donating the toques.  Yes, she gave us two.  We drew for one--with the winner being Karisha Devlin.  Congratulations Karisha and enjoy wearing it to keep warm this winter.  We kept all those raffle tickets and will try to sell a few more to give away the second toque later in the fall.  So if interested, contact us at the above address and we'll sell you some raffle tickets--three chances for $1.  Pretty good buy for a hand-knitted cap!

We also gave out information on the Stem to Stone project by WAA:  a for-free project that you send in the information for your deceased veteran and they will make a dog tag and place it on one of the trees on the tree farm in Maine.  Every three years boughs are pruned from that tree, which are used to make the  wreaths.  It is a living memorial to your veteran.  You may contact the WAA website at  www.wreathsacrossamerica.org
to find out about the program and to get the form to fill out to mail in.

Guess that is all about the Cornfest.  Enjoy the fall!

SEPTEMBER 2018 LUNCH & BUSINESS MEETING

September 6, 2018 found the Novelty Senior Citizens' meeting for their monthly luncheon and business meeting. Prior to the noon hour, nurse Sherry Goodwin took blood pressures, and inquired of people's health issues. She mentioned about the flu shots: not yet available at the Health Department, but should be before next month's meeting. They may try to have it available in the different communities and might have it here next month. Diana led the pledge to the flag, and Kathryn gave the prayer. Happy Birthday was sung to Helen Pulse whose birthday was today.

The birthday cake was made by Diana this month—a delicious mouth-watering banana cake. It was the only dessert brought—no other cakes or pies, which in itself was amazing! Those enjoying the food and fellowship were Joyce Simpson, Judith Rhoades, Denis Howard, Dorothy Howard, Kathryn Wilkerson, Marsha Pinson, Diana Cheatum, Sue Ahern, and Helen Pulse.

After cleanup, Diana called the business meeting to order. Marsha read the minutes to last month's meeting. Helen moved to approve them, Dorothy seconded. Approved as read. Judith presented the treasurer's report, which is attached. Denis made motion, seconded by Kathryn to approve this report: it was approved unanimously.

Business:
Marsha gave updated report on WAA. As of now, we have 63 wreaths purchased.  Marsha had put on her facebook page that we were running behind and please stop by  our booth at Cornfest.

Workers at the Cornfest booth for Saturday are 8:00-10:00 a.m.00—Judith and Lynn Browing VanDolah; 10:00-12:00---Lois Browning and Walla DeRosear; noon-2:00 p.m.--Marsha Pinson and Joyce Simpson; 2:00-4:00—Diana Cheatum and Jeannette Foreman; 4:00-6:00 p.m.--Kathryn Wilkerson. Judith has everything loaded in her vehicle to take up Saturday morning. Larry & Cleva Clark are letting us use their canopy for the event, and will have it up (with help from Jim Pinson) on Friday evening.

Discussion of putting out surveyor flags in Novelty. Judith made a motion, seconded by Joyce that yes, we put marker flags at Novelty. Motion Passed. Judith will decide when that will be done. If Bee Ridge cemetery has all veterans covered, they may use our extra flags to mark the graves ahead of time. (They did this last year as well.)

Dorothy will make the birthday cake for next month; although we know of no birthday celebrants. Jeff Otto will celebrate, but they are already in Florida—where he has begun his chemo treatments. Our best wishes to him on this journey.

Coffee makers for the next month (Tuesday mornings) are 11th Kathryn; 18th—Marsha; 25th—Judith; October 2—Donna Faye.

Judith moved to adjourn, Helen seconded.
