Racing to the checkered flag!!

I am still considered a tourist here in Novelty and I decided to take
my friend Nancy, another tourist, to see the R/C track in town.
Novelty R/C Raceways and Hobbies.

WOW!  Wasn't what I was expecting!
Rex has been racing for about 19 years.
Rex Franke was grooming the track for the Saturday night
race, so we bothered him for a bit.  It gave me a chance to take a few photos to share with our blog community.
Had a lot of questions and he obliged.

Did you know the cars have chip sensors in them?
Really?  How cool is this!  Computers read all the
information the car is putting out.
It can even tell you who won the race!
The racetrack has been in Novelty since 1999.

I love the part where it reads "Don't take this to seriously, you are only
racing toy cars".

Looks like a tough track to me.  There are also just oval tracks. How boring can that be!

Saturday is race day and qualifying.  In the evening is the feature to see who wins
ROAR rules are official rules! ROAR.com - Radio Operated Automobile Racing.
June 25 starts a "series". First of four races. Just like the big cars there will
be awards and prestige.

Thank you Rex for the tour, the wonderful explanations (your patience) and an invitation to a race.

It was a hot day, but a great day at the track.  Let's go racing boys (& girls) ...Boogity, Boogity, Boogity.

FUNDRAISING FOR WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA

We are fundraising for the Wreaths Across America!  For just six weeks of organized work, we have 44 wreaths already sponsored, and a list full more from people who want to sponsor a wreath for their specific loved veteran, but we just haven't received the money yet.

We are also putting donation "boots" in several locations throughout the county as well as having one with us as we have a booth in Hurdland for the 4th of July (and watch for our float in that parade!)

We were very thankful to Sam Shoults who answered a swap shop ad for boots! He would simply give them to us, as long as he didn't have to shine them up!!!!  Here are his boots, and his comment:  Those old boots were truly "boots on the ground" in Iraq during Desert Storm in 1990-91. I'm glad they can finish service helping collect money for a cause. Best of luck!  Thank you, Sam for serving....and thank you for your donation!

And after some elbow grease, here they are now (well, they do have the laces in now).

I am sure I did not do nearly as good a job of shining them as most soldiers would.   You can drop by Lucky's Cafe in Edina and see one of them, and while you're there, drop in a donation for a wreath!  (If you haven't been there, you will also enjoy looking around their decorations and pictures of local veterans.  Oh, yes, they have "humongous" tenderloins as well!)

The Fourth of July was a scorcher
As the townfolk competed for shade.
The children were anxiously jumping —
It’s hard to await a parade.
Then suddenly everyone rose up.
“The flag!” came a child’s cry.
We smiled and clapped and saluted —
Old Glory was passing by!
There was pride in the song of the choir
As they honored our soldiers brave.
While emotion gripped, I gazed at the flag
And it gave me a gentle wave.

of all aspects of the program for better assistance with questions and follow-ups.

This will be a sponsorship and donation collection site.  Fill the combat boot.

Christmas In July.

When we started Wreaths Across America there were two cemeteries involved,
Locust Hill and Novelty, now there are over 8.
This is a wonderful gesture to our community, however this also raises
the number of veterans' graves to over 600.  We know we will not be able to
place a wreath on each headstone, but all will be honored.

A goal has been set of 40 or more wreaths sponsored in the month of July.
This will move us closer to our goal of at least 200 wreaths minimum.

Credit cards may be used on the WAA website. Please include
our group fundraising number # MO 0048P.

Tagging of the Trees - a Living Memorial.

This is a remembrance event.  Families may submit the names of
veterans who have passed to the national organization and a dog tag will be made.
This dog tag will be placed in a tree on the Worcester Tree Farm in
Maine.  They will send a photo of the tag in it's tree.  It will remain there as a
perpetual living memorial.  The tagging is a free gift to our military families.
The names on the tags will be read out load the day of the tagging event.

The tree will be tipped every three years and  become part of a wreath for
a veterans' memorial wreath and sent somewhere in the US or abroad.
Wreaths are placed in over 1,100 locations in all 50 states and beyond.

2016 is the 25th year wreaths will be placed in Arlington National Cemetery.
The theme for this year is "Say Their Names".

"Say Their Names.  No one ever wants to be forgotten.

A person dies twice:  the first time when they stop breathing and a
second time when someone mentions their name for the last time."

We hope you will continue to "Say Their Names".

September:  Back to School campaign

This will be a part of the mission to REMEBER. HONOR. TEACH.

CornFest:  We will have a "What a Difference a Day Makes" Booth.

This will be a sponsorship and donation collection site.
Fill the Combat Boot !!
Pocket changes matters.   Twenty-five cents becomes $1 and $1 becomes $15 and
this equals the amount of one wreath for sponsorship.

Kathryn Wilkerson receives award.

Kathryn Wilkerson winner of the Heart of FCE Award.

1953 was a great year for a new club member, Kathryn Wilkerson, as she began
her journey with FCE. First as a member of Show-Me Extension for nine year; then in 1983 she was a grass root member of Green Acres FCE.

Always generous with her time and talents, she continues to present education programs, share her love of gardening and stay active in the local Knox County Historical Society.
Kathryn contributes her time to work on club projects, Essay & Artwork Contests, the annual Senior Tea, 4-H Award projects and continues putting forth a willing Heart of FCE.

Congratulations!
From everyone at the Novelty Senior Center.

To Dad's everywhere... Thank you!
HOT..HOT..HOT!

It was soooo hot this past weekend, but our sale
was a success.
With all things considered such as the Hwy 6 sales, Edina
town-wide sales and the heat, we are pleased that we did so well.

Thank you for all the donations and for stopping by to see us.
